Overview

A fully integrated facility

The Ayr Water Treatment Plant is an expansion of an existing brownfields plant, upsizing the capability and capacity of the existing treatment plant to 14ML per day. The scope of the project included the construction of a fully integrated facility, covering civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and controls.

Scope

Treatment process

  • Raw water inlet and header tank. 8m internal diameter, 4.5m high, with inlet and outlet pipework, analysers, instrumentation and a re-lift pump station.
  • Aeration, oxidation and coagulation tank. A 13m x 7m concrete structure with internal baffles, chambers, mixers, penstock and actuated valves, and analysers.
  • Gravity filter structure. An 18m x 6m concrete structure housing four individual filter cells, concrete plenums, filter media, inlet chutes, backwash troughs, actuated valves and instrumentation.
  • Settling basin. A 23m x 13m concrete structure including metal walkways, instrumentation and sludge transfer pumps.
  • Filtered water pump station. A 7m x 5m concrete structure downstream of the gravity filters, pumping treated water to the existing clean water reservoir.

Chemical dosing and supporting infrastructure

A 34m x 7m block building houses tanks, analysers, dosing systems for caustic soda, potassium permanganate, alum and polymer, and switchboards, integrated with the existing chlorine dosing system.

Supporting infrastructure included an HV switchroom building, an air scour building, a sludge pump station discharging waste sludge to the town sewer, and a fibreglass packaged supernatant pump station returning water to the head of the plant.

Commissioning and handover

SCADA programming and controls integration covered compilation of a detailed functional description, programming workshops, offsite programming and SCADA integration to suit the existing system.

Pre-commissioning, testing and commissioning covered testing of all pipes, structures and equipment, progressive energisation of six switchboards and field boards, pre-commissioning of all equipment, wet commissioning, process commissioning, a proving period and handover.
